Abstract

This study was intended to disclose the relationship between autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and emotional and behavioral disorders (E/BD) through an original cognitive mechanism (송광한, 2013a), from which diverse phenomena of human mind appear, in order to decide if two disorders are one or two independent disorders. The results indicate that ASD and E/BD share a common biological cause of excessive growth of mental space in the brain. Excessive attention and consciousness are directed to the internal cognitive space in the brain (ASD) subsequently, causing autistic cognitive disorder. And the autistic cognitive disorder results in diverse characteristics of E/BD reflected by intellectual level. Therefore, ASD and E/BD, as appearing through the same hierarchical casual relationships, are not independent disorders, and the different criteria of two disorders are emotional and behavioral characteristics of individuals with ASD appearing according to intellectual level. Based on the results, this study proposes integrative understanding of the two disorders and its direction, and provides specific implications for educational direction and research on biological causes of ASD and E/BD.
