Abstract
The research aims to provide a mathematical shortfall risk framework, rather than conceptually, in the light of occupational pension valuation. Adapting modern portfolio theory to pension fund valuation, we set up two specific types of integrated risk metrics: That is, DC integrated pension risk model (suitable for defined contribution pension plan) and DB integrated risk model (applicable to defined benefit pension plans). In particular, these are all mathematically formulated, using asymmetric measure of risk that focuses on the performance below a specified deterministic target level: for example, shortfall probability, shortfall expectation and shortfall semi-variance. Throughout this paper, we are devoted to providing insight into how to identify each of valuation-related specific risks and to integrate these as one proper risk and finally to formulize that integrated risk, for the reason that having followed whole these procedures, we can now explore an optimal funding and/or investment strategy. Lastly, I hope that this research will contribute to being a starting point of making not conceptual risk approach to but quantitative risk approach to pension valuation, at least between pension provider financial institutions in Korea.
