Abstract
The aim of this study was to understand how the short-term cognitive restructuring strategy influenced to the changes of affects related to the post-event rumination and social anxiety in the cognitive behavioral therapies among the university students with the social anxiety. To do so, we enrolled 31 students with the social anxiety in a universities in Seoul, participants were randomly assigned to cognitive restructuring strategy (n=15) or the control(habituation) strategy (n=16), and conducted to measure the K-SADS(Social Avoidance and Distress Scale), SAS(Speech Anxiety Scale), DASS(Depression Anxiety Stress Scale), PANAS(positive and negative affect schedule), and SBSA(Self-Beliefs Related to Social Anxiety Scale) as the baseline characteristics for both groups before the experiment initiation. In addition, we measured the PERS(Post-Event Rumination Scale, and PANAS of the participants immediately after they presented the topic for 3 minutes suggested by the investigator. Since each group executed its designated strategies including cognitive restructuring strategy and control(habituation) strategy, they were measured again for the PERS, PANAS to check the effectiveness of each strategy. In two days after the experiment, they followed up to measure the PERS and SBSA so as to understand how long the effectiveness of the strategy lasted. The results of this study are as follows. First, both groups demonstrated the decline of the negative post-event rumination and the increase of positive post-event rumination, and only the group of cognitive restructuring strategy showed to sustain the negative post-event rumination to be low, significantly, in two days after the completion of the experiment. Second, the negative and positive emotions were maintained low, significantly in both groups. Third, only the group of cognitive restructuring strategy showed maladaptive self-beliefs to be maintained low significantly since the execution of the strategy. This study suggests the followings. We found that the short-term strategy of cognitive restructuring was effective to help to decrease the negatives and increase the positives of the post-event rumination, to reduce more on negative affects related to the social anxiety, and to change the maladjusted self-confidence positively. Finally, we discussed the limitations of this study and the suggestions for further studies.
