Abstract
This study examined the effect of Perceived parents’ emotional invalidation on adolescent depression, and the moderated mediating effect of cognitive vulnerability and perceived stress. Study data were collected through an online survey of 218 first and second graders in high school. Based on the collected data, the mediating effect, the moderating effect, and the moderated mediating effect were analyzed. The results are as follows. First, there were no significant gender differences in Perceived parents’ emotional invalidation, adolescent depression, and cognitive vulnerability. However, in the negative perception factor of perceived stress, females scored significantly higher than males. Second, Perceived parents’ emotional invalidation, adolescents’ cognitive vulnerability, depression, and perceived stress all showed significant positive correlations. Third, cognitive vulnerability mediated the relationship between Perceived parents’ emotional invalidation and adolescent depression. Fourth, perceived stress moderated the relationship between cognitive vulnerability and depression. Fifth, the process of Perceived parents’ emotional invalidation affecting depression mediated by adolescents’ cognitive vulnerability was moderated by perceived stress, and the moderated mediating effect was significant. The results of this study show that an effective therapeutic intervention for depressed adolescents should consider family factors such as Perceived parents’ emotional invalidation, individual factors such as cognitive vulnerability, and environmental factors such as perceived stress in an integrated way.
