Abstract
This study aims to explore educational support measures for students with borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) by examining the education status and perceptions of elementary school teachers. To achieve this, a survey was conducted with 109 elementary school teachers, and frequency and percentage analyses were performed. The results are as follows. First, the education field faces a discrepancy between the number of suspected students and the number of diagnosed students, highlighting the need for developing objective screening and diagnostic tools. Second, it was found that homeroom teachers primarily serve as the main instructors for students with BIF. Teachers recognized the necessity of expanding the deployment of dedicated teachers to alleviate their workload and enhance the effectiveness of education. Third, elementary school teachers mainly collaborated with grade-level teachers or special education teachers in instructing students with BIF, while cooperation with parents was relatively limited. To strengthen collaboration with parents, raising awareness and providing parental education were deemed necessary. Fourth, although teachers’ understanding of students with BIF was relatively high, the perceived effectiveness of education was low. To improve educational outcomes, it was emphasized that teachers’ professional competencies should be strengthened and that educational programs should be provided according to students’ developmental stages. Lastly, teachers recognized the necessity of establishing a continuous support system encompassing the entire process of screening, diagnosis, and intervention. Based on these findings, this study discusses strategies for effectively implementing education for students with BIF.
