Abstract
The foundation of unity is the nature of the church itself. Nothing else than one flock and one Shepherd(John 10:16) is conceivable. Barth sounds the right note when he says: “The quest for the unity of the Church must in fact be identical with the quest for Jesus Christ as the concrete Head and Lord of the Church. The blessing of unity cannot be separated from him who blesses, in Him it has its source and reality, through His Word and Spirit it is revealed to us, and only in faith can it become a reality among us.” According to Calvin, it is not sufficient for us to comprehend in mind and thought the multitude of the elect, unless we consider the unity of the church as that unto which we are convinced we have been truly engraft. For no hope of future inheritance remains to us unless we have been united with all other members under Christ, our Head. Paul urges the Ephesians to be one body and one Spirit, just as they were called in one hope. If truly convinced that God the common Father of all and Christ the common Head, being united in brotherly love, they cannot but share their benefits with one another. Although in the outward and accidental state of place or time or rites or age the church is diverse, it is yet one with an essential unity: unity of body, unity of head, unity of the Spirit, unity of faith, unity of love, unity of hope. The unity of church is th gift of God. The unity of church is the unity as a gift and a task. The fact of belonging to Christ-in indicative and imperative, in gift and callingentrusts a great deal to the church, specially the right, even in brokenness,to testify to true, new fellowship. Therefore we must maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as we were called to the one hope that belongs to our call, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all, who is above all and through all and in all. God still loves the diversity in unity and the unity in diversity.
