Abstract

Psalms 1 and 2 are very closely related in their vocabularies and themes, and function as an introduction to the book of Psalms. First, these two psalms introduce to the readers what ‘contexts’ are to be considered when they read psalms. Individually the psalmists face a lot of temptations and attacks from the wicked, and nationally they should confront the rebellions, oppressions, and the attacks of the nations and their rulers in the world. Not only Psalms 1 and 2 introduce the context of the psalms, but also clearly present the ‘gospels’ with which the psalmists overcome the problematic circumstances. In short, it is the victory and consummation of Yahweh’s kingdom. The first gospel which Psalms 1 and 2 present is “the One enthroned in heaven” (2:4), that is, the basic presupposition that Yahweh is the king over the whole world. The second gospel of the Psalms is Yahweh’s “anointed one” (messiah, 2:2), his “king”(2:6), and his “son”(2:7), that is a Davidic king. Yahweh’s kingship and reign over Israel and the whole earth is exercised through this regent. The third gospel is “Zion, my holy hill” (2:6) from where Yahweh and his king reign over the world. The house of God where Yahweh is present and the people worship him, and the house of king where he rules in justice and righteousness. The fourth gospel is meditation on “the torah of Yahweh” (1:2) and “taking refuge in” Yahweh and his anointed(2:12), which are two principles of happiness in the kingdom of Yahweh. The torah is a manual of Yahweh’s reign, with which the king rules over the kingdom. In addition, Yahweh’s king and his people have to rely upon Yahweh, the true king over the world, for their security and well-being. The last gospel is that Yahweh’s reign through his anointed bring the wicked to the judgment and the righteous to the salvation and blessing (1:6;2:9,12). The whole world will become the kingdom of Yahweh when the powers who rebel against his kingdom are destroyed completely. These gospels and contexts which psalms 1 and 2 suggest, provide us the viewpoints of the book of Psalms, and are really connected with each psalm.
