칼빈의 성도의 표지론: 그리스도인의 리더십에 관한 교리적 고찰

초록

본고는 칼빈의 기독교 강요 4권 1장 8절을 중심으로 “성도의 표지”(notaesanctorum)에 대해서 고찰한다. 칼빈은 이 말을 어디에도 사용하고 있지 않으나 교회의 표지와 더불어 비가시적 교회(ecclesia invisibilis)와 가시적 교회(ecclesia visibilis)의 긴밀함을 연결시키는 개념으로 사용하고 있다. 교회를 그리스도를 머리로 하는 그의 지체들의 연합체 혹은 몸으로 정의하는 그의 입장에서 성도의 표지는 사실 교회의 표지의 본질 혹은 기원을 보여준다고 보아 무방하다. 주목할 것은 칼빈은 이 개념으로써 참 교회의 외적인 표지와성도의 구원의 확신을 함께 역동적으로 고찰하고 있다는 점이다. 여기에는형제적 사랑과 교리적 일치를 교회의 수평적이며 수직적인 요소로 여기는칼빈의 입장이 잘 용해되어 있다. 칼빈은 성도의 표지의 기준을 “모종의 사랑의 판단”(quoddam caritatis iudicium)에서 찾았다. 여기에는 “신앙의 확신”(fidei certitudo)이 반드시 요구되는 것은 아니다. 왜냐하면 지상의 교회 안에는 가라지도 이리도 있기 때문이다. 이러한 지상의 혼합된 교회(ecclesiapermixta)는 천상의 교회에 대한 종말론적인 소망을 낳을 뿐만 아니라 현세의 참 교회에 대한 갈구를 더하는데, 성도의 표지론은 이에 부응하는 교리라 고 칼빈은 여기고 있다 . 칼빈은 성도의 표지를 신앙의 고백, 삶의 모범, 성례의 참여로 제시한다, 이 세 가지는 그리스도가 교회의 머리이시고 여전히 교회를 위하여 중보하신다는 기독론적 이해 가운데 전개된다. 본질적으로 그리스도의 의를 전가받은 교회의 성도는 그를 구주로 고백하고, 그와 더불어살고, 그의 살과 피를 먹고 마시는 표지를 드러낼 수밖에 없다는 당위성이오히려 부각된다. 성도의 표지 역시 교회의 표지와 다름없이 은혜의 방편으로 주어진다는 칼빈의 지론이 이로부터 연유한다. 그리스도인의 리더십은이러한 표지를 구현하는 고백과 삶으로부터 고찰된다. 그것은 본질적으로은혜 받은 백성의 감사의 영역에 해당한다. 그것은 자질 혹은 공로와 일차적인 관련성이 없다. 참 성도가 마땅히 참 교회를 이루듯이, 참 성도는 분명참 제자의 도를 드러낸다. 여기에 그리스도인의 리더십의 고유함이 있다.

Abstract

This paper examines the marks of true believers(notae sanctorum), basedmainly on Calvin’s Institutes 4.1.8, and nowhere in his opus magnumdoes he literally use the exact phrase. However, he employs the conceptto intimately and dynamically connect the invisible church(ecclesiainvisibilis) with the visible church(ecclesia visibilis). To Calvin, whodefines the Church as the community(societas) and body(corpus) of themembers incorporated into a spiritual body with Christ as their head, itseems, in fact, that the marks of true believers represent the origin or theessence of the marks of the Church. Besides, it should be noted thatCalvin by using the concept intends to dynamically investigate not onlythe external marks of the Church but also the assurance of the believer. In the doctrine lies the Calvin’s view to regard doctrinal agreement andbrotherly love as the horizontal and vertical elements of the Church. Calvin finds the reference of these marks in “a certain judgment oflove(quoddam caritatis iudicium)”, to which the assurance of faith (fideicertitudo) is not necessarily required, for there are weeds and wolves inthe earthly churches. Calvin regards confessing faith, living an exemplarylife, and participating in the sacraments as three elements of the marksof the true believers. These are unfolded under the Christologicalstandpoint that Christ continues to be the head of the Church and toassume his Mediatorship for his Church and the believers by applying toeach Christian his righteousness, which has been imputed beforehandforensically. These refer to confessing Christ as the Lord, living withhim, and eating and drinking his body and blood, and are given not byany effort based on personal qualities but only by the means of grace. Thus, Christian leadership belongs to the realm of gratitude rather thanof merit. No primary cause is related to any human achievement andgood works. As true Christians are to form the true Church, so they areto reveal the way of true discipleship. Here lies an inherent feature ofChristian leadership.
