Abstract
One of the fundamental and crucial perspectives from which Calvin presents his ecclesiological discussions is his functional understanding of the church. The title of the fourth book in the final edition of his Institutes(1559) represents this perspective: “The external means or aids by which God invites us into the society of Christ and holds us therein.” This study attempts to show that Calvin calls the visible Church “the mother of all believers” in the first chapter of the Institutes IV not to explain the mystical identity of the Church and its ecclesiological implications, but to elucidate its functional identity in the relationship between God, the gracious Father and believers, children of God. For Calvin, the mother Church has no authority and dignity for herself except the fact that God institutes her for His children and endows her with the role to teach and nourish them while they are weak in this world. For this argument, the first section investigates the general use of the metaphor “mother” in Calvin’s writings. The next two sections examine ecclesiological implications of this metaphor for Calvin concerning two important topics: the necessity of the Church for salvation and the believers’ obligation of unity in the Church. In conclusion, these examinations show that Calvin tries to highlight God’s fatherly grace of accommodation for His children by using Cyprian’s metaphor of “the Church as the mother of all believers.”
