Abstract

This study is based on the theme of the Biblical Hebrew words ṣedāqâ and mišpāṭ in the book of Jeremiah. To understand the notion of righteousness and justice in the prophets, we have to look at the book of Deuteronomy, which is the basis for our understanding. In my view, ṣedāqâ and mišpāṭ are included in the concept of tôrâ, which is a larger category. In the book of Jeremiah, there are various terms to describe the meaning of law and statutes, such as, tôrâ, ṣedāqâ, mišpāṭ, ḥūqâ and ḥoq. The purpose of the study is to investigate the co-relationship between the terms and what they mean in the text. As can be seen in [Table 1], the frequency of ṣedāqâ is relatively low rather them the term mišpāṭ. In the case where ṣedāqâ and mišpāṭ are used in a parallel structure which is a rhetorical device of hendiadys, in total five times. The reason the speaker uses the term mišpāṭ is not to reveal the divine attributes hidden only by God but to show through the people of God. It is the principle of God's sovereign rule, which is realized in the world. When mišpāṭ is used alone, the image of God's punishment and judgment is prominent in other examples except its nine occurrences. It is first used (1) to mean the reign of God, or (2) to the problems that arise between the person and person. Second, in the cases of the remaining 32 |「성경과 신학」 83 nine occurrences, mišpāṭ is used to urge the people of Judah not to set their minds on šiqutṣ and ṯôʿēḇâ but to repent and live a life of mišpāṭ. Through the prophetic temple sermon, the prophet Jeremiah urges the people of Judah to correct their ways and actions. My focus is that the way and action are closely related to the term mišpāṭ. Third, the usages of tôrâ and ḥūqâ also means a lot. In the book of Jeremiah, the prophet uses the term tôrâ for the purpose of reproaching that the lives of the people of Judah did not walk along the tôrâ from the past to the present. Exceptionally, the term ‘my tôrâ’ in Jer 31:33 means the law of God. Fourth, the usages of ḥūqâ and ḥoq are characterized by a wide variety of meanings, though not many examples are used. There is a case that the ḥūqâ and ḥoq are used as a parallel structure, but they are mainly used to refer to the order of operations of the celestial bodies that humans can not control, the customs of the nations, or legal regulations. In summary, the meaning of ṣedāqâ and mišpāṭ in Jeremiah is revealed through the lexical semantic cohesion of tôrâ, ḥoq, šiqutṣ and ṯôʿēḇâ. God's will is that the people of God do not lose their hearts to abominations (šiqutṣ and ṯôʿ ēḇâ), but live in the life of righteousness and justice according to the law of God.
