Abstract

This study explores the variations on the meaning of the terms justice(jP'v.mi) and righteousness(hq"åd"c.) in Isaiah 56-59 and discusses its theological implications. Under the influence of the Biblical Theology Movement emerged in North America and Europe(1940-1960), there was an attempt to interpret the meaning of the word by analysing its etymology. However, this method has resulted in anachronistic errors in the interpretation of the biblical word. Thus, synchronistic approach is preferred rather than diachronic one in deciphering the meaning of the word and the interpreter should carefully consider the context where the term occurs. The two terms justice(jP'v.mi) and righteousness(hq"åd"c) appear in Isaiah 56-59, expressing various nuances of the meaning within the text. In Isaiah 56:1-8, the meaning of justice(jP'v.mi) and righteousness(hq"åd"c) is related with the life of the covenant responsibility manifested in faithful keeping of the Sabbath and God’s promised salvation(the collocation of yti['Wv)y> and hq"åd"c). The term hq"åd"c in Isaiah 56:9-57:21 means the sarcasm of the wicked lifestyle of the people who are indulged in the idolatry and do not fear of the Lord(57:12). The term jP;Ûv.mi used in Isaiah 58 expresses the cultic regulations which the people practice hypocritically(v. 2) and ^q,d>ci denotes the promised salvation to those who practice the truefasting(v. 8). In Isaiah 59 jP;Ûv.mi expresses the faithful lifestyle which God requires(v. 8) and God’s salvation(vv. 9, 11, 14 - with hq"åd"c 15, 16, 17). Particularly, hq"åd"c. denotes the salvific nuance in collocation with the term salvation(h['ÞWvy>). The two terms jP'v.mi and hq"åd"c mean the faithful lifestyle to God’s covenant(the practical human behavior) and God’s salvation. The theology of God’s salvation and human responsibility is expressed in the development of the meaning of the two terms. The two terms justice(jP'v.mi) and righteousness(hq"åd"c.) contribute to not only the holistic reading of Isaiah, but the development of the theology of Isaiah through the various nuances of the meaning as well.
