Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine Calvin’s interpretation on Ezekiel’s vision in Ezekiel chapter 1 and suggest its critical evaluations. There have been various history of interpretation regarding the vision in Ezekiel 1. Many scholars have introduced the variety of interpretations according to their own methodologies, such as allegorical, symbolic interpretation, and historical critical interpretation in 20th century that is focused on the for- mation of the text. Calvin, however, compared the vision with the sacra- ments, requiring it to be understood with the Word of God. The vision is a way of conveying the revelation of the knowledge of God, and the soul of vision is in the doctrine, and faith is generated from it. The purpose of the vision is to confer authority to God’s messenger and to terrify those who listen to it with awe. When Calvin describes the general features of the four living creatures in Ezekiel 1, instead of merely depicts them, he provides theological interpretation, focusing on God’s will and sovereignty. The number four signifies that God’s sovereign power influences all corners of the world. The wings and wheels beside the four living creatures signifies the mobility of God’s glory. A figure like that of a man above on the throne is the glory of the person of Christ of the Trinity. God accommodated himself to the capacity of the prophet so that he may understand the transcendant God. Calvin’s interpretation of the vision in Ezekiel 1 is charac- terized by God-centered interpretation and intertextuality. Calvin first deals with the meaning of the text and then other related texts to investigate the rich meaning of it. He also pursued the moderate and humble interpretation. He, however, often could not overcome the weakness of allegorical inter- pretation by demonstrating the excessive theological interpretation of the vision text. Thus, I suggest the balanced approach to the vision text with theological, historical, and literary aspects. First, it would be useful to exam- ine the historical and cultural background of the vision of the four living creatures. Second, our interpretation should be directed from the Textlinguistic approach which is focused on text’s linguistic dynamics. Lastly, we should consider the function of the vision of Ezekiel 1 from the perspective of holistic Reading.
