Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify the unhappy situations perceived by young adults with developmental disabilities through Q methodology. Based on 246 statements collected through the Q population, the final 33 Q samples were extracted through a multi-step review process. 11 young adults with mild developmental disabilities who can communicate verbally and three mothers who represented the severely developmentally disabled who need full care due to difficulty in communicating were composed of P samples, and 33 statements in which young adults with developmental disabilities were not happy were Q-classified. As a result of the analysis, four types were derived: ‘autonomy deficiency situation’, ‘comparison and evaluation situation’, ‘limit acceptance and dependence situation for disabilities’, and ‘difficult situation of acceptance of disabilities’. Type 1 recognizes controlled or forced autonomy-deficient situations as the least happy. Type 2 reports as a comparison and evaluation situation, but it negatively perceives comparison with non-disabled brothers. Type 3 is sensitive to parental discord or pain by feeling the need for parental protection as it recognizes and accepts its disability. Type 4 tended to want to perform the same task as non-disabled people of similar age, but the desire for normalization is strong, so they agree that independence from their parents, driving, and friends with the opposite sex as happy factors. This study suggests that even young adults with developmental disabilities have different perceptions and perceptions of unhappy situations. In consideration of their characteristics, it is necessary to change the design and application of support services, interventions, and programs.
