Abstract
This study aims to explore the mental health profiles of mothers with children transitioning to elementary school, examine the factors influencing maternal mental health, and investigate differences in children’s psychosocial adjustment according to maternal mental health types. To achieve this, data from the 8th wave of the Korea Child Panel, comprising 1,598 households, were analyzed using Stata 18.0 and Mplus 8. A latent profile analysis (LPA) was conducted to classify maternal mental health types, and the influence of marital relationship factors, economic factors, and social support factors was examined. Subsequently, differences in children’s psychosocial adjustment were analyzed based on their mothers’ mental health profiles. The findings of the study are as follows. First, the latent profiles of maternal mental health during the transition to elementary school were classified into three types: psychologically stable type (44.85%), balance- maintaining type (45.9%), and high psychological risk type (10.96%). Second, marital satisfaction, marital conflict, subjective socioeconomic status, and the level of social support were identified as significant factors influencing maternal mental health. Third, the analysis of differences in children’s psychosocial adjustment according to maternal mental health types revealed that children whose mothers belonged to the psychologically stable type demonstrated higher self-esteem and school adaptation compared to those whose mothers belonged to the balance-maintaining type or the high psychological risk type. Finally, based on these findings, recommendations for promoting maternal mental health and enhancing children’s psychosocial adjustment were discussed.
