Abstract

This study tries to demonstrate that the successful ministry of GeorgeWhitefield, the most excellent preacher after the Apostles’ age and themain figure of revivals in England and the Great Awakenings inAmerica in the 18th century, lies in the work of the Spirit. ThoughWhitefield is today forgotten by the shadow of John Wesley, the 18thcentury still witnesses that the 18th century revivals are deeply indebtedto the ministry of Whitefield. It is true that an effective cause ofWhitefield’s ministry is God alone. Revival always comes from God’sinitiative action. Man cannot create revival. Nevertheless God savessinners and revives His churches through the efforts of His servants. Inrecent years, scholars point out that Whitefield’s successful preachingministry results from his dramatic acting talent and rhetoric, or his cleverskills of propaganda using printing acting in the process ofindustrialization of the 18th century. Even though these are not to beexcluded, traditionally is it maintained that the core and permanentelement of Whitefield’s ministry is his spiritual piety and the work ofthe Spirit. Let us then look at Whitefield’s own printed sermons, journals, and letters for his preaching ministry. For Whitefield, preaching is to show the glory of God, and enhancethe well-being of the churches by leading sinners to Christ. Particularly, Whitefield reflects his own conversion in his preaching ministry. That is,conversion experience in the Spirit is the aim and core of preachingministry. Following apostle Paul’s idea on preaching(1Cor. 2:1-5),Whitefield tries to preach the crucified Christ by the demonstration ofthe Spirit’s power. Consequently a prayer for the Spirit’s grace is forhim essential to his preaching ministry. That a preacher must have hisown conversion experience is an important qualification for preacher,Whitefield maintains. At the same time, he points out, it is importantthat preacher should be a saint rather than a scholar. Yet this does notmean that he neglects knowledge and science. Rather he fears that theministry of a preacher with much knowledge, yet without conversionexperience is dangerous. Whitefield suggests an experimental preachingrather than speculative preaching. Furthermore, he recommends extemporepreaching in delivery of sermons. However this does not mean to preachextemporarily without studying. Rather Whitefield maintains that preachingmust go with studying and praying together. “Study without prayer isatheism, prayer without study presumption.”As Boanerges preachersentences the wrath of God against the hard-bitten sinners throughpreaching conviction of the law, whereas to the repentant hearts he asBarnabas comforts them by the Gospel. This shows Whitefield’s spiritualinsight that he understands preaching ministry as a spiritual warfareagainst Satan. Whitefield underscores that preacher should preach theword of God alone, the Gospel of Christ. For a right understanding ofthe Scriptures, prayer is needed for the help of the Spirit, he maintains. Conversion of the hearers is also possible only when the Spirit works, preacher should pray for that. In conclusion, Whitefield emphasizesabove all the work of the Spirit in his preaching ministry.
