Abstract
This article is to find out the answer of what Paul wants to say about his own experience at Damascus according to quotations of Old Testament. We can see Paul’s autobiographical statements about the experience at Damascus in Galatians 1:15-16; 1 Corinthians 9:1-2; 15:8; and 2 Corinthians 4:6. Especially this article has focus on Galatians 1:15-16, since Paul quoted the passages in the Old Testament. As many scholars have the same opinion, Paul brought two passages in the Old Testament in Galatians 1:15-16. Two passages are Isaiah 49:1 and Jeremiah 1:5. Furthermore we can find a considerable analogy between Galatians 1:15-16 and two passages in the Old Testament. The analogy shows us two points. One is a calling from God. In the case of Isaiah 49:1, the Servant of the LORD is called by God; In the case of Jeremiah 1:5, the prophet Jeremiah is called by God. Paul himself is called by God as well. The other is the Servant of the LORD in Isaiah 49:1, Jeremiah, and Paul are toward Israelites and nations. So Paul, a Jew says that God called him so that he might preach the gospel among the Gentiles. That is why what we can see the analogy is that Paul himself regards the experience at Damascus as a calling, such as the Servant of the LORD in Isaiah 49:1 and Jeremiah in Jeremiah 1:5, not as a conversion.
