The notion of ‘complex parallelism’ is not new as a literary or rhetorical figure. It is a figure which must be unified with various patterns of the chiastic structure and parallelism into one larger chiastic structure. It is also known as ‘complex chiastic structure.’ In the surface structure, the passage can be observed as a single chiastic structure, and in the deep structure, various patterns of chiastic structure and parallelism can be found in each parallel section consisted of the surface structure as well. In this paper, the definition and types of chiasm or chiastic structre which is components of complex parallelism will be addressed, and criteria for detecting the chiastic structure will also be suggested.
