Abstract
One of the most elaborate compositions in the Bible is Lamentations. This paper attempts both to probe what the poet captures through the oracles of Jeremiah for the purpose of framing his theological perspective of Zion’s catastrophe and to analyze how the poet applies it strategically to his writing of laments. Even the bizarre compositional integration of the daring accusation of God with tearful pleading for divine mercy comes to be in harmony with the poet’s desire to persuade God to return God’s heart to the covenantal community of faith at Jerusalem. The five poems in Lamentations are put forward by a remarkable poetic form, of which emotional phrases fathom the heights and the depths, the length and the breadth of the brutal reality with which the faith community was faced after the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem. In the poet’s laments the agony and ecstasy of the Israelite covenantal relationship with God find poignant expression, highlighting the poet’s quest for understanding the community’s experience of God-forsakenness. The major purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that Lamentations is a persuasion-oriented rhetoric which adopts a few theological themes of the book of Jeremiah and adapts them to the milieu of the survived community in Zion. The poet carefully devises several methods to touch the heart of God. Indeed, the poet, or collectively the survived community, actively attempts to persuade God. In doing so, the poet shows wonderful skills in using various poetic devices such as delicate repetitions, vivid images, and judicious adoption of divine utterances from the prophetic book. Creating strongly allusive language and developing unique thematic ideas, the poet shows his masterful arts to interweave some notions from Jeremiah’s prophecies with his strategic laments. Consequently, motifs and imagery in the portrait of Zion’s calamity are designed to reflect, add, modify, and even take advantage of the original meaning in their earlier context, in order to reinforce the poet’s argument. Most of all, his reuse of the same mode of diction as Yahweh has taken in his pathos with Jeremiah is marvelous. Each section of this article will be structured to explore those intertextual features between Lamentation and the book of Jeremiah: (1) the pain of zion: the violence Zion suffers is God’s unrelenting judgment, (2) the reality of Zion: the divine vengeance on Judah’s infidelity, (3) the conviction of Zion: God’s 0compassion with the covenantal Israel, (4) the desire of Zion for the Day of the Lord’s judgment. The identifying categories of intertexts between Lamentations and the Book of Jeremiah includes (1) the shared language or syntax between the poet’s laments and Jeremiah’s oracles, (2) the re-enacted situations between the two texts, (3) quantitative density of the shared components between the two texts, and (4) the transition of context through the dialogic relation between the two texts.
