Abstract

This work has attempted an exploration of how to preach from the oracles against the nations in the book of Jeremiah with special attention to the judgement against Babylon. In this process, the argument has been advanced that because the judgements against the nations in the book of Jeremiah convey theological significances of the new covenant, the preacher is able to proclaim the relevant insights that the new covenant has for the congregations of the modern church. To this end, the work uses the rhetorical method which focuses on rhetorical devices of the text, such as rhetorical structures, word plays, key words, repetitive themes, and so on. In supporting the above arguments, attention has been drawn to the location of the oracles against the nations (Jeremiah 46-51) within the latter part of the book of Jeremiah (chapters 25-52), with the result that those oracles should be understood in terms of the consummation of the new covenant. As a second step, it has been revealed that those oracles has its chief concern in the judgements against two nations, that is to say, Edom and Babylon. Especially, the judgement of Babylon is proclaimed as a part of the plan of God to fulfill the new covenant. In the judgement against Babylon, a picture has been painted of Babylon as an evil force of sin, On the basis of this picture, the pastor can preach the point that the new covenant is the one which enables its beneficiary to live a life away from sin (Jer. 50:11-20). Another point can be presented that the new covenant that the saints of today are in empowers them to have the righteousness of God, resulting in living a life of kindness, justice, and righteousness (Jer. 51:7-10). A step further, the judgement against Babylon lends weight to the notion that the meaning of the new covenant is integrally related to the holiness of the temple of God. in this respect, the preacher can preach the meaning of the salvation of the saints in the new covenant as having its purpose in living a holy life in the presence of God. Finally, the preacher is challenged to use a variety of rhetorical devices to coney the messages, as is the case with the text of Jeremiah.
