Abstract

The Bible, originally written in Hebrew and Greek, reaches modern readers through the essential process of translation. Among these translations, the King James Version(KJV), completed in 1611, has had a profound impact on the history of Bible translations and has remained a major version for over 400 years. However, with the rise of text-critical debates in the late 19th century, KJV-Onlyism emerged, leading to controversy within Western churches. Eventually, this reached Korea, where it has continued to cause confusion to this day. The Korean church, in particular, has emphasized the inerrancy of the Bible but has relatively lacked understanding of textual criticism, manuscript studies, and the diversity of translations, which has hindered an adequate response to the KJV-Onlyism debate. This controversy highlights the need for a deeper understanding and careful selection of various Bible translations within the Korean church today, suggesting an important area of study for pastors, theologians, and laypeople. This study first aims to examine the issues surrounding KJV-Onlyism, followed by an analysis of the characteristics of the KJV, highlighting its differences from other translations. This will help Bible researchers select the most appropriate translation for their needs. The study focuses on the New Testament and addresses the following topics: first, an overview of the historical background and key features of KJV-Onlyism(Chapter 2); second, the text-critical issues related to the Byzantine text, which serves as the textual basis of the KJV(Chapter 3); third, a comparison of the textual bases(Vorlage) and translation principles of the KJV and various other translations, with emphasis on how these factors contribute to the diversity among translations(Chapter 4). Finally, the study aims to assist pastors and laypeople by proposing practical methods for selecting translations that are suitable for Bible study.
