『바른성경』의 원문충실도에 대한 연구(II): 신약성경을 중심으로

현재 대부분의 한국교회는 『성경전서 개역개정판』을 공식적으로 사용하고 있다. 『개역개정』은 문법적⋅구문론적 관점에서 원문충실도를 검토해 보았 을 때, 많은 문제점을 안고 있다. 이에 한국성경공회에서는 『개역개정』의 고 어, 한문체, 오역 등의 문제점을 제시하면서 원어 본문에 충실하고 현대의 어 법에 맞는 『바른성경』을 2009년 출간하였다. 이 글은 ‘형식일치원칙’ (Formal Correspondence Translation)에 입각해 번역했다고 알려진 『바른성경』의 원문 충실도와 일관성 문제를 검토하는 것을 그 목적으로 하고 있다. 검토 방법으 로는 원문에 있는 단어를 첨삭한 경우, 원문의 단어를 부정확하게 번역하여 독자의 이해를 방해한 경우, 번역자의 신학적 해석이 첨가된 경우, 그리고 동일한 단어나 구문을 다르게 번역하여 일관성을 잃은 경우 등이다. 이런 여러 유형들로 나누어 이런저런 면에서 검토해 본 결과 2009년에 출간되고 2011년에 3판으로 수정 출판된 『바른성경』은 『개역개정』에 비해 상대적으로 원문충실도가 더 뛰어나다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 동일 단어 나 구문 번역의 일관성면에서도 그러했다. 더 나아가 지금까지 한국에서 출 판된 한글번역 성경 중에서 높은 점수를 줄 수 있을 듯하다. 그러나 어쩔 수 없이 부족한 면들도 상당수 눈에 띈다. 『바른성경』은 원문을 잘 반영한 것으로 알려진 영어 번역본(ESV)과 비교한 결과 상대적으 로 원문 충실도가 낮다는 사실이 확인되었다. 즉 『개역개정』이나 다른 한글 번역 성경들보다는 뛰어나지만, 형식일치번역의 결정판인 ESV 에 비해서는 원문충실도가 상당히 부족하다는 말이 되기도 한다. 심지어는 『개역개정』의 오역을 답습하거나, 개악의 경우도 없지 않았다. 이러한 사항은 『바른성경』 이한국교회에서공헌할점을드러내줌과동시에, 더나은번역이되기위 해 향후에 어떠한 노력이 필요한지 잘 드러내 준다. 결론적으로 말하면, 『바 른성경』은 다른 한글성경에 비해 원문충실도와 번역의 일관성 면에서 훨씬 높은 점수를 줄 수 있다고 판단되고, 또한 조금의 수정을 거쳐 강단용으로 사용되어도 큰 부족함이 없어 보인다.
Abstract
Now most of the churches in Korea use the New Korean Revised Version (i.e. NKRV) as their official Bible. However, regarding its faithfulness to the original texts, many problems have been raised as a result of the (scholars’) grammatical and syntactic analysis on it. Thus, the Korean Bible Society pointed out some of its problems such as archaism, the adoption of Chinese writing style, mistranslation, and others. So, in 2009, the Korean Bible Society published the Korean Truthful Version (i.e. KTV), which is more faithful to the original manuscripts and reflects modern Korean. This article aims to analyze the KTV, which has been known as a “Formal Correspondence Translation,” in terms of its faithfulness to the original texts and consistency in translation. And these are the cases that are to be exam- ine: (1) cases that a word in the original text is edited, (2) cases that have caused confusion among the readers as a word in the original text is trans- lated incorrectly, (3) cases that the translator’s theological interpretation is added in the translation, (4) cases that the consistency in translation is lost as same words or phrases are translated differently, and so on. After I analyzed these cases by dividing them into different categories, I was able to confirm that the KTV, which was first published in 2009 and came out with the third edition in 2011, was more faithfully translated than the NKRV. As well, it was more consistent in the way that the same words or phrases were translated. Further more, it seems to deserve the highest mark for its faithfulness to the original texts among the various translations that have been published in Korea so far. However, there are still a number of problems found in the KTV. Compared to the English Standard Version (i.e. ESV) which is known for its faithfulness to the original texts, it is relatively less faithful (to the origi- nal manuscripts). In other words, the KTV is more faithful to the original texts than other versions such as the NKRV, yet it is less faithful to the original texts than the ESV, which is one of the authoritative Formal Correspondence Translations. It even contains some of the mistranslated words or phrases from the NKRV as they are. Besides, there are even some cases of poorer translation. And this shows us what the KTV would need to do to contribute to the Korean church. At the same time, it unveils what kind of effort we need to make for a better translation. In conclusion, the KTV seems to deserve a much higher mark for its faithfulness to the original texts and its consistency in translation and is good enough to be used on the pulpit after having some revision.
