Abstract

The Gospel of Luke uses the Adam motif in three places to demonstrate that the salvific work of Jesus Christ is intended for all nations. First, the genealogy of Jesus in Luke portrays Adam as the son of God, contrasting him with Jesus, the Son of God. Just prior, Jesus is described as the Son of God at his baptism (Luke 3:22). Now, in the genealogy, Adam is introduced as the son of God (Luke 3:38). This distinctive genealogical portrayal in Luke shows that Jesus’ ministry is set against the backdrop of Adam. Second, the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness also depicts him as the new Adam (Luke 4:1-13). In the beginning, Adam succumbed to the devil’s temptations regarding eating, pride, and immortality. Jesus faces the same three temptations in the wilderness. While Adam failed, Jesus overcomes the tests. Therefore, the new Adam, Jesus, creates a new humanity for those who believe in him. Finally, there are three scenes in the crucifixion that suggest Jesus as the new Adam. Overcoming Satan’s temptation not to die, Jesus obediently walks the path of death. Despite the mockery of those saying, “Save yourself,” he silently accepts the cross. Ultimately, he leads a repentant criminal to paradise. The old Adam blocked the way to paradise, but now the new Adam opens the path and begins a new era. Thus, the Gospel of Luke portrays Jesus as the new Adam and shows that a new humanity will be born through his disciples who proclaim him.
