본 연구는 미국 체육스포츠의 변천사 중 스포츠 황금기를 맞이하게 된 스포츠 문화가 미국인의 삶의 질을 향상시켜 주는 대중문화로 어떻게 전환되어 미국인의 생활 속에 기능하기에 이르렀는가를 밝히는데 본 연구의 필요성과 목적이 있다. 본 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위한 연구 방법은 미국의 스포츠 문화와 관련된 각종 기록을 고찰하는 문헌 고찰 방법을 사용하였으며, 연구 내용으로는 첫째, 스포츠 황금기의 시대적 환경, 둘째, 풍요와 스포츠의 저변 확대, 셋째, 경기 스포츠의 지향과 신체육으로 분류하여 고찰하였다. 연구 내용을 중심으로 분석한 결과 다음과 같은 내용으로 정리할 수 있다. 문화적 측면에서 보면, 1920년대 미국의 하나의 유니크한 사회적심리적 풍조는 스포츠 기회를 사회적으로 보장하고, 스포츠를 위한 공공의 시설과 계획 수립을 정책으로 진전시켜 공공의 스포츠(레크리에이션) 환경 정비에 획기적인 영향을 미친 것이다. 의식사적 측면에서 보면 이 시기 스포츠 문화의 저변 확대와 밀접한 관련을 가진 신체육의 사조는 수업으로서의 스포츠를 일반화시킨 것이며, 또한 여가 선용의 사고방식에 기초한 신체적 레크리에이션의 습관 형성을 시사한 것이다. 20세기 미국 스포츠 문화가 대중문화로 전환하게 된 요인 중의 하나는 인종 문제라는 의식의 벽을 뛰어넘음으로서 진정한 삶의 질을 향상시켜 주는 대중문화로 미국인의 의식 속에 뿌리를 내리게 된 것이라고 평가할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
In America, sports culture has ushered in the golden era and improved the quality of life, becoming a part of everyday life. This study examined how the American sports culture came to occupy a seat in mass culture. This paper employed the method of literature review and the following are the findings of the analysis on the four study subjects. In the aspect of cultural history, the 1920s saw the expansion of sports opportunities into the public realm with the help of unique sociological and psychological atmosphere. The conditions for sports activities came to ripen with the introduction of the policy on public sports facilities and strategies. As for the trend of thought, the new physical education, which was closely associated with the expansion of sports base, established sports firmly as a course at school. Lastly, one of the decisive factors in converting sports into a part of mass culture is the breakdown of race barrier. With this, American sports culture has taken its roots in American conscious as one branch of mass culture to improve the quality of life.
