Abstract
The progressive movement was a major period in the history of American reform because it was a broad response to the many problems created by industrialization and urbanization. Both sport and physical education were profoundly influenced by advocates of progressive reform. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the influence of progressive movement on both sporting and physical education. In order to achieve this purpose, this paper focuses on three: firstly, fragmentation - the legacy of physical education; secondly, play theory and the Public School Athletic League; and lastly, the playground movement. The play theory which was instrumental in both the PSAL and the playground movement possessed characteristics that encouraged effective citizenship in immigrant children. The notion of adult supervised activities and the emphases in teacher training in physical education, thereby creating an expert in a particular curriculum, exemplified the aim of progressivism of changing the environment of an individual, thereby you can change the direction of mankind. The theories and the philosophies of these reformers ushered both sport and physical education into the modern era.
