멘 드 비랑의 『습관론』으로 본 스포츠

초록

본 연구는 서양 철학사 내에서 인간 이해와 관련하여 꾸준히 주제화된 ‘습관’ 개념을 멘 드 비랑의 『습관론』을 통해 스포츠에 실천적으로 적용하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 인간의 마음과 신체의 관계성은 스포츠 철학의 중심 논제인데, 멘 드 비랑은 『습관론』에서 이와 관련한 탁월한 분석을 선보인다. 본 연구에서 『습관론』의 주요 논점들을 통해 스포츠를 조망하는 과정은 멘 드 비랑 철학이 현대 스포츠 철학과 공명할 수 있는 현재성을 추론하는 과정이자 스포츠 철학 연구 범위의 확장 가능성을 타진하는 과정이었다. 이를 위하여 본 연구는 다음과 같은 순서로 논의를 진행하였다. 먼저, 멘 드 비랑 철학의 형성 배경을 살펴보고 『습관론』과 습관 개념의 의미를 철학사적으로 개괄하였다. 다음으로, 『습관론』의 주요 개념들을 신체와 관련된 논의를 중심으로 검토하면서 스포츠 주체와 인간 신체의 존재론적 의미를 되짚어 보았다. 그리고 이를 토대로 멘 드 비랑의 습관 분석을 스포츠에 반영하여 스포츠에서 습관이 작용하는 방식들을 확인하고, 멘 드 비랑 철학이 현대 스포츠 철학에 제시할 수 있는 시사점을 알아보았다. 본 연구에서 확인한 바, 멘 드 비랑의 존재론적 문제의식, 그 고유한 자아성과 신체성은 현대 철학의 신체현상학적·윤리학적·인지과학적 문제의식과 맥이 닿아 있었다. 이 점은 멘 드 비랑의 사유가 스포츠 철학에 새로운 이론적 틀로 기능할 수 있는 가능성을 시사한다. 특히, 스포츠 철학이 신체성을 새로이 모색하고 스포츠 주체의 의미를 도덕적·실천적 차원에서 재고하는 데 있어서 멘 드 비랑의 철학과 그의 습관 분석은 유의미한 시각을 제공한다.

Abstract

This study aimed to practically apply the concept of ‘habit’, which has been consistently discussed concerning human understanding in the history of Western philosophy, in sports through Maine de Biran’s The Influence of Habit on the Faculty of Thinking (hereafter referred to as On Habit). The relationship between the human mind and body is a central topic of sports philosophy, and Maine de Biran presents an excellent analysis of this in On Habit. The process of looking at sports through the main arguments of On Habit in this study was a process of inferring the current state of Maine de Biran’s philosophy that can resonate with modern sports philosophy and exploring the possibility of expanding the scope of sports philosophy research. To this end, this study proceeded with the discussion in the following order. First, the background of the formation of Maine de Biran’s philosophy was examined and the meaning of On Habit and the concept of habit was outlined from a philosophical perspective. Subsequently, the main concepts of On Habit were examined with a focus on discussions related to the body, and the ontological meaning of the sports subject and the human body was reconsidered. Based on this, the author reflected on Maine de Biran’s analysis of habits in sports to confirm how habits function in sports and explored the implications that Maine de Biran’s philosophy can provide to modern sports philosophy. As confirmed in this study, Maine de Biran’s ontological awareness of problems, its unique selfhood, and corporeality were in line with the phenomenological, ethical, and cognitive science awareness of the body in modern philosophy. This suggests the possibility that Maine de Biran’s thinking can function as a new theoretical framework for sports philosophy. In particular, Maine de Biran’s philosophy and his analysis of habits provide meaningful perspectives for sports philosophy to newly explore corporeality and reconsider the meaning of sports subjects in moral and practical dimensions.
