내재주의 스포츠이론에 관한 비판적 고찰

스포츠이론가들은 스포츠에 관한 개념적, 설명적, 규범적 문제들에 대해 지적으로 옹호 가능한 대답을 제공하기 위한 철학적 틀을 개발해왔다. 이러한 분석틀을 스포츠이론이라 부를 수 있다. 본 논문은 스포츠 속 도덕적 판단과 행위의 규범적 기준에 관한 내재주의의 입장을 비판적으로 고찰함으로써 내재주의가 스포츠이론으로서 지닌 한계점을 지적하고, 스포츠의 도덕적 가치와 탁월성은 규칙이나 내재적 원칙에서 온전히 나올 수 없으며 사회적 관습으로부터 규범적 중요성을 갖게 됨을 논증하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이러한 목적을 위해, 먼저 스포츠에 관한 내재적 해석이 무엇인지, 그리고 내재주의를 지지하는 이론적 근거는 무엇인지를 Dixon, Russell, Simon의 문헌을 통해 분석함으로써 내재주의 스포츠이론의 등장 배경과 핵심적인 주장을 요약 및 정리하였다. 다음으로 내재주의 스포츠이론에 관한 관습주의자들의 문제제기와 이에 대한 내재주의자들의 응답을 살펴보고, 여기에서 드러나는 주요 쟁점을 중심으로 내재주의 스포츠이론의 타당성을 비판적으로 검토하였다. 끝으로 스포츠의 도덕규범과 탁월성이 어떻게 역사적, 사회문화적으로 변할 수 있는지를 살펴봄으로써 내재주의 이론은 관습적인 가치에 의존하지 않고서는 효과적인 규범적 도구로 작동하기에 불충분함을 규명하였다. 이 논문은 스포츠 속 도덕적 판단과 행위에 관한 사회관습의 핵심적 역할과 규범적 중요성을 증명함으로써 스포츠윤리학자들이 직면한 인식론적, 방법론적 딜레마를 해결하는 데 포괄적이고 효과적인 수단을 제공할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
Sport theorists have developed a philosophical framework to provide intellectually defensible answers to conceptual, explanatory, and normative questions about sport. This analytic framework can be called sport theory. This paper aims to point out the limitations of internalism as a sport theory by critically examining the position of internalism regarding the normative standards of moral judgment and behavior in sport, as well as to show that the moral value and excellence of sport cannot come out entirely from rules or internal principles, gaining its normative weight from social convention. For this purpose, by analyzing the internalist interpretation of sport and the theoretical basis for supporting it through Dixon, Russell, and Simon's literature, the background behind the emergence of internalism and its key arguments are summarized. Next, after reviewing the problems of the internalism raised by conventionalists and the internalists’ responses to them, the validity of the internalism is critically examined, focusing on the major issues. Finally, by looking at how sport’s moral norms and excellence can change historically and socioculturally, this paper concludes that the theory of internalism is found insufficient to function as an effective normative tool without relying on conventional values. This paper will provide a comprehensive and effective means to solve the epistemological and methodological dilemma faced by sports ethicists by demonstrating the core role and normative importance of social convention regarding moral judgment and behavior in sport.
