스포츠윤리에 관한 관습주의적 접근과 그 한계

이 논문은 스포츠에서 도덕적 판단과 행위의 규범적 기준에 관한 관습주의적 접근을 비판적으로 분석함으로써 관습주의가 지닌 스포츠윤리 이론으로서의 한계점을 논증하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해, 먼저 스포츠윤리에 관한 형식주의와 내재주의 이론의 주요 주장과 문제점을 살펴봄으로써 관습주의 이론의 등장배경에 관해 간략히 설명하였다. 다음으로 Andrei Marmor의 사회적 관습 이론에 기초하여 스포츠에서 관습의 개념과 규범적 속성을 분석하고, 관습주의를 지지하는 대표적 스포츠철학자인 William Morgan의 문헌들을 토대로 스포츠윤리 이론으로서 관습주의의 핵심 주장과 기능을 설명하였다. 끝으로 스포츠에서 행위의 윤리적 평가에 관한 Morgan의 관습주의적 견해들을 비판적으로 검토함으로써 관습주의 이론이 지닌 문제점을 임의성과 상대성 측면에서 규명하였다. 본고의 관습주의 이론에 대한 비판의 목적은 이 이론의 문제점을 지적하여 관습주의가 잘못되었음을 보이는 데에 있기보다는 관습주의 이론의 결점을 검토하고 개선하여 또 다른 대안적 스포츠윤리 이론을 구축하기 위한 중요한 분석적 기초를 제공하는 데에 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to critique the conventionalist approach to the normative standards of moral judgment and behavior in sport and demonstrate the limitations of conventionalism as a sport ethics theory. To this end, first, the background of the emergence of conventionalism theory is explained by examining the main arguments and problems of formalism and internalism regarding sport ethics. Next, I analyze the concept and normative properties of convention in sport, based on Andrei Marmor’s theory of social convention, and explain the core argument and function of conventionalism as a sport ethics theory by drawing upon writings by William Morgan, a representative sport philosopher. Finally, by criticizing Morgan’s conventionalist claims on the ethical evaluation of behavior in sport, I identify the problems of conventionalism in terms of arbitrariness and relativity. The goal of the criticism against conventionalism does not lie in indicating its problems and showing it is wrong, but in revising shortcomings of conventionalism and providing an analytical basis for building another alternative sport ethics theory.
