본 연구는 체육 교과가 학교 교육에서 주변화되어 온 철학적‧교육적 배경을 비판적으로 고찰하고, 이를 해소하기 위한 대안을 해석학적 관점에서 제시한다. 체육은 전통적으로 신체 중심의 기능 교과로 간주되어 주지주의 중심의 교육 담론 속에서 주변화되어 왔는데, 이는 실체 이원론과 자유교육론에 기반한 지식의 형식론에 기인한다. 이에 대응해 기존 연구들은 전일론적 심신관에 입각한 존재론적 접근과 체육 지식의 명제화 및 학문화에 바탕을 둔 인식론적 접근을 제시해 왔으나, 두 접근 간 철학적 긴장과 내재적 가치 정당화의 한계는 여전히 해소되지 않고 있다. 본 연구는 Ricœur의 해석학을 바탕으로 체육에서 이루어지는 객관적 설명과 주관적 이해가 ‘선이해–설명–이해–자기이해’의 순환 구조 속에서 자기(Self)에게 통합됨을 밝힘으로써, 기존에 대립하던 존재론과 인식론의 통합을 시도한다. 이러한 해석학적 통합을 통해 체육의 정당성은 고정된 내재적 가치에 의존하는 것이 아니라, 신체활동의 체험이 자기이해로 통합되는 실천적 지식의 구성 과정에서 드러나는 교육적 의미로 재정립된다. 본 연구는 체육이 인간의 삶 속에서 자기이해를 추구하는 해석학적 실천임을 규명하고, 체육 교과의 정당성을 해석학적 철학의 기반 위에서 새롭게 제시한다.
Abstract
This study critically examines the philosophical and educational foundations of the marginalization of physical education in school curricula and proposes a hermeneutic alternative. Physical education has been sidelined within intellectualist educational discourses rooted in substance dualism and the forms of knowledge framework of liberal education. Previous attempts at justification—an ontological approach based on a holistic mind–body conception and an epistemological approach grounded in the formalization of propositional knowledge—remain limited due to unresolved philosophical tensions and the reliance on intrinsic value. Drawing on Paul Ricœur’s hermeneutics, this study shows how objective explanation and subjective understanding in physical education are integrated through the hermeneutic cycle of ‘pre-understanding–explanation–understanding–appropriation’, offering a means to bridge the divide between ontology and epistemology. Through this integration, the justification of physical education is reframed as an educational meaning emerging from the appropriation of bodily experience as practical knowledge. This study thus presents physical education as a hermeneutic praxis that enables appropriation within lived experience, providing a renewed philosophical foundation for its justification.
