Abstract

This paper examines a recurring utterance in contemporary dance appreciation, commonly expressed as “just watch comfortably” or “watch as you feel” and interprets it as a cultural symptom revealing the absence of an adequate language for appreciation. While this utterance is often understood as a generous invitation that guarantees the audience’s freedom of interpretation, it simultaneously presupposes the experiential reality in which contemporary dance appreciation is reduced to the realm of individual feeling. The paper argues that this reality cannot be sufficiently explained by a lack of education or familiarity on the part of audiences. Rather, this phenomenon should be understood within the legacy of Kantian aesthetics, which has confined art appreciation to subjective judgment and taste, thereby obscuring the conditions under which shared understanding and truth may emerge. Drawing on Hans-Georg Gadamer’s Truth and Method, the paper adopts the idea that art is a “linguistic event” and redefines aesthetic experience not as a private emotional response but as an event of understanding. From this perspective, the paper critiques the prevailing opposition between dance and language and argues that the absence of an appreciation language constitutes a structural problem of modern aesthetics. Ultimately, this paper calls for the formation of a new language of appreciation through which contemporary dance may be rethought as an event of truth.
