‘교사 성직관’의 재해석을 통한 교사 헌신도 제고 가능성의 모색

초록

오늘날 교육에 부과된 어려운 과제들을 해결하고 극복해나가기 위해서는 역량 있고 헌신적인 교사들의 수가 더 증가해야 한다. 따라서 이 글은 교사의 헌신을 유발시킬 수 있는 요인으로 전통 사회의 교사 성직관이라는 개념을 꼽았다. 그리고 그 시사점 및 현재 적용의 가능성에 관해 알아보았다. 현대의 헌신적인 교사들도 일종의 교사 성직관을 공유하고 있는 경우가 많다. 그런데 전통적 교육자들과 현대의 헌신적 교사들 사이의 공통점으로 깊은 인간 인식, 학생의 영성에 대한 관심, 교육의 이타적 가능성에 대한 믿음 등을 들 수 있다. 결론적으로 현대의 교사와 교사 지망생들의 깊은 자기 인식을 유발하기 위해서는 자아성찰을 돕는 교육과정 및 자기 인식을 중시하는 평가 체계의 개발이 필요할 것이다.

Abstract

To solve the difficult tasks imposed upon today’s school education, our schools need more teachers who are competitive and committed to their work. Thus, this study selects the traditional concept of ‘teaching as a vocation’ as a possible factor to induce teacher commitment and discusses its ramification and applicability to the current educational setting. It has been noted that many of today’s committed teachers also possess the attitude of ‘teaching as a vocation’ and both the pre-modern and modern teachers committed to their work and pupils share such common propensities as deep human understanding, interest in students’ spirituality, and faith in altruistic function of education. In the final analysis, to stimulate deep self-understanding of today’s teachers and teacher aspirants, it will be necessary to develop a curriculum that helps self-reflection and the evaluation system that values teacher’s self-understanding.
