지방 소도시 여대생의 진로탐색 경험 분석: 다층적 격차와 노동시장 내 자기인식을 중심으로
The Analysis of Career Exploration Experiences of Female University Students in Small Provincial Cities: Focusing on Multi-layered Disparities and Self-Perception in the Labor Market

이 연구는 지역대학 여학생들의 진로 탐색과 노동시장 진입 준비 경험을 분석하여 당사자들이 ‘지역’ ‘소도시’ ‘지방대학’으로서 자신의 존재를 어떻게 인격적으로 규정하는지를 밝힌다. 구체적으로, 지방 소도시 4년제 대학에 재학 중인 여학생들이 교육을 통해 쌓은 역량과 실제 노동시장에서의 요구 사이에서 경험하는 미스매치에서 보이는 자기 의식과 그것의 구조적 한계를 밝히고자 했다. 이를 위하여 광역시가 아닌 지방 소도시 소재 대학에 재학중인 8명의 여학생을 대상으로 하여 심층 인터뷰를 수행해서 경험적 연구자료를 수집했다. 주요 연구의 질문은 지역에 거주하고, 공부하고, 일하는 청년 여성들의 자기 인식, 노동시장에서 경험하는 미스매치 현상, 젠더화된 현실과 수도권 집중 현상의 이중적 현실에서 경험하는 진입장벽이었다. 분석 결과, 연구에 참여한 여대생들은 ‘지역 소도시 지방대학생’으로서 지역 내에서 의도적이거나 구조적으로 비가시화되어 있었고, 지역인재 육성 정책에서도 소외되어 있었다. 이들이 경험하는 노동시장 진입장벽은 ‘지방대라는 현실’ 측면에서 남학생과 공유하는 한계점도 있었지만, 지역 소재 노동시장에서 남성을 암묵적으로 선호하는 분위기 등으로 인해서 또 다른 진입장벽을 경험하는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 구조적인 한계에 대해서는 명백하게 불리한 자기를 인식하는 것과 달리, 성차에서 발생하는 진입장벽에 대해서는 개인적 귀인에 그치며‘더 열심히 노력하는 것’을 전략으로 수렴되는 양상을 보였다. 이러한 구조적 특성과 개인적 특성이 결합된 이들의 상황에 대하여 연구 말미에 지역 공동체의 어떠한 교육적 노력이 문제 현상을 개선할 수 있는지를 제시하였다.
Abstract
This study analyzes the career exploration and labor market entry preparation experiences of female university students in regional areas, aiming to uncover how these students perceive their identities in terms of being part of a “region,” a “small provincial city,” and a “regional university.” Specifically, the study seeks to reveal the students' self-awareness and structural limitations as they experience a mismatch between the competencies they develop through education and the demands of the actual labor market. To achieve this, in-depth interviews were conducted with eight female students attending universities in small provincial cities that are not metropolitan areas, providing empirical research data. The main research questions focused on how young women living, studying, and working in regional areas perceive themselves, the mismatch they experience in the labor market, and the entry barriers they face in the dual reality of a gendered society and the concentration of opportunities in the capital region. The analysis revealed that the participating female students, as “regional university students in small provincial cities,” were either intentionally or structurally marginalized within their regions and excluded from regional talent development policies. While the labor market entry barriers they faced were shared with male students in terms of the “reality of attending a regional university,” the participants also encountered additional barriers due to the implicit preference for male workers in local labor markets. However, unlike their clear awareness of the structural disadvantages they faced, the participants tended to attribute the gender-based entry barriers to personal factors, often resorting to strategies of “trying harder” as a response. In light of the combination of these structural and personal characteristics, the study concludes by suggesting educational efforts that regional communities can undertake to address and improve these issues.
