초록

‘삼위일체 교리’(the Doctrine of the Trinity)는 기독교의 성경적인 신이해의 정수를 요약하는 것임과 동시에 하나의 전체로서 기독교 신학의 총괄이자 신앙고백의 핵심 기초이다. 특히 고대 동/서방교회의 주요 교부 신학자들에 의한 위대한 신학적 기여들을 통하여 ‘공교회(보편교회)의 고전적 정통 삼위일체 교리’에 대한 신학적 이해와 발전, 그리고 확립이 이루어졌다. 여러 세기 동안의 치열한 신학적 교리논쟁을 거쳐 정통적인 삼위일체 교리는 기독교 공교회 신앙고백의 핵심인 ‘사도신경’(the Apostles’ Creed)과 ‘니케아-콘스탄티노플 신경’(the Nicea-Constantinople Creed, 325년 & 381년)과 아타나시우스 신경(the Athanasian Creed, 6/7세기)으로 정립되었고, 이후 잇따르는 모든 확장된 신앙고백서들의 기초가 되었다. 특히 고대 동/서방교회에 있어 ‘공교회(보편교회)의 고전적 정통 삼위일체 교리’에 대한 신학적 이해와 발전, 그리고 확립에 있어 위대한 신학적 기여는 다음과 같은 주요 교부 신학자들에 의해 이루어졌다. 먼저, 동방교회 교부들에는 리용의 이레니우스(Irenaeus of Lynons, ca.130-200), 오리겐(Origen, ca.185-254), 아타나시우스(Athanasius, ca.296-373), 그리고 3명의 ‘카파도키안 신학자들’로 불리는 가이사랴의 바실(Basil of Caesarea, ca.330-379), 나지안주스의 그레고리(Gregory of Nazianzus, ca.329-389), 니사의 그레고리(Gregory of Nyssa, ca.335-395)가 있다. 그리고 서방교회 교부들에는 터툴리안(Tertullian, ca.160-225), 그리고 히포의 어거스틴(Augustine of Hippo, 345-430)이 특히 중요한 기여를 하였다. 이후 중세교회에 있어 삼위일체론의 이해 및 발전과 관련해서는, 특히 성령 하나님의 ‘이중발출’(the Filioque) 문제와 관련하여 동방교회의 포티우스(Photius, 810-895)와 서방교회의 안셀무스(Anselm of Canterbury, 1033-1109) 사이의 논쟁, 그리고 스콜라 신학의 정점이라고 평가되는 토마스 아퀴나스(Thomas Aquinas, 1224/1225-1274) 등의 중요한 신학적 기여가 있었다. 본 논문에서는 그러한 ‘공교회의 고전적 정통 삼위일체론’의 형성과 발전 역사를 고대 동/서방교회의 정통 교부 신학자들로부터 중세 스콜라신학의 정점인 토마스 아퀴나스에 이르기까지의 역사를 집중적으로 탐구하며 살펴보았다. 이러한 과정을 통하여, 삼위일체론과 관련한 각 시대의 핵심 논쟁점과 이에 대한 주요 신학자들의 특징적인 이해와 독창적인 공헌이 과연 무엇이었는지를 분석하였다. 또한 마지막으로 그러한 동/서방교회 교부들의 ‘공교회적 정통 삼위일체 교리’에 대한 이해가 오늘날 한국교회의 왜곡된 삼위일체론 이해를 올바로 교정함에 있어 어떻게 도움을 줄 수 있는지를 살펴보았다.

Abstract

The doctrine of the Trinity is the very essence of Christian biblical understanding of God, the summary of Christian theology as a whole, and the ground-foundation of confession of faith. Especially, ‘the classical orthodox doctrine of the Trinity of the catholic church’ had been developed and established by the ancient Eastern/Western Church Fathers. Through the severe theological controversy during several centuries in the ancient Church, the classical orthodox doctrine of the Trinity had been established in the Apostles’ Creed, the Nicea-Constantinople Creed(325 & 381), and the Athanasian Creed(6/7 century) as the foundation of the Christian confession of faith. Especially, in the ancient Eastern/Western Church, the establishing of the classical orthodox doctrine of the Trinity had been made by the contributions of the following important Church Fathers. In Eastern Church, there were Irenaeus of Lynons(ca. 130-200), Origen(ca. 185-254), Athanasius(ca. 296-373), and the three Cappadocians, that is, Basil of Caesarea(ca. 330-379), Gregory of Nazianzus(ca. 329-389), Gregory of Nyssa(ca. 335-395). In Western Church, there were Tertullian(ca. 160-225), Augustine of Hippo(345-430), and Thomas Aquinas(1224/1225-1274). In this study, I focused on in special concentration such an important Church Fathers’ understandings of the doctrine of the Trinity. In that process of analysis, I examined the kernel controversial point in each era, and the important and creative contributions of the theologians. Finally, I suggested a helpful propositions for a more proper understanding in the church of Korea according to ‘the orthodox doctrine of the Trinity of the catholic church’.
