Abstract
This study begins against the backdrop of the spiritual crisis facing the Korean Church-characterized by distorted motivations for prayer, a deficiency in contemplative spirituality, and an excessive focus on practical activism. Specifically, while the modern church’s emphasis on ‘practice(diakonia, διακονία)’ often tends towards external action or service, John Cassian emphasizes practice(praktike) as an internal discipline encompassing purification of the heart, eradication of vices, and inner self-reflection and repentance. John Cassain argues that contemplation(theoria) is merely an illusion if inner purification is absent, asserting that the practice emphasizing purity of heart(puritas cordis) must necessarily precede and condition the attainment of a contemplative state. This research explores how a prayer’s internal transformation can be explained within the framework of practice and contemplation by applying John Cassian’s four methods of prayer(purity of heart, discernment, unceasing prayer, and contemplation) to an analysis of Psalm 6. Psalm 6 displays a journey that moves through the practical stages-including the petitioner’s grief and lament, recognition of sin, and confession-to a contemplative stage marked by assurance of God’s presence and spiritual confidence. This study reveals that the sudden reversal in Psalm 6 is not a simple emotional shift but rather a demonstrable process manifested within the spiritual journey from praktike to theoria. In conclusion, this research proposes that reading the Psalms through John Cassian’s prayer method can serve as a vital alternative for overcoming the current spiritual crisis in the Korean Church. This approach offers not merely textual interpretation but a path for holistic prayer training that transforms the believer’s inner life and entire existence, thereby suggesting a direction that can make a practical contribution to the restoration of the Kingdom of God and the spiritual maturation of the community.
