Abstract
This study analyzes the existential meaning of loneliness and purity in Søren Kierkegaard’s The Sickness Unto Death, offering a renewed interpretation of the paradox of self-realization. Loneliness is not understood as social isolation but as an existential lack that emerges when the self fails to align with its spiritual source. Such loneliness exposes the fragmentation of the self while simultaneously functioning as a spiritual call that urges the individual to return to authentic selfhood. Kierkegaard’s distinction between two forms of despair—despair of not willing to be oneself and despair of willing despairingly to be oneself—serves as a key framework for interpreting the dual structure of loneliness. While loneliness may deepen into self-isolation and self-betrayal if mismanaged, it can also become an occasion for grounding the self in fundamental spiritual trust. The study further distinguishes purity from naivety, defining purity as the result of spiritual maturation. Whereas purity naturally diminishes through the development of consciousness, purity is not something lost through time but rather a spiritual possibility that must be consciously realized at each moment. The paper argues that the experience of loneliness becomes a prerequisite for deep inner awakening and the realization of the self, enabling the individual to reestablish life upon spiritual truthfulness. Ultimately, this research elucidates the paradoxical structure of Kierkegaardian self-realization by exploring the intricate relationship among loneliness, consciousness, and purity, demonstrating that solitude is an unavoidable pathway toward the maturation of the human spirit.
