Abstract
In 20th-century Reformed theology, Abraham Kuyper and Neo-Calvinist transformationalism became the mainstream academic discipline. Then, in the past two decades, David VanDrunen has presented his own public theology, championing natural law and the two-kingdom doctrine. This has necessitated a Reformed theological examination of VanDrunen’s natural law and two-kingdom doctrine. The purpose of this paper is, first, to evaluate David VanDrunen’s natural law from a Reformed theological perspective, and second, to defend VanDrunen in relation to the debate between VanDrunen and neo-Calvinism on natural law. The primary debate between VanDrunen and Neo-Calvinism regarding natural law revolves around two issues. The first concerns the relationship between natural law/general revelation and special revelation: should they be integrated or should their independence be recognized? Neo-Calvinism argues that natural law/general revelation should be recognized only when under the guidance of special revelation, the Bible. VanDrunen, on the other hand, argues that the integration of natural law and general revelation with special revelation applies only to believers, and that the reason, gifts, and works of unbelievers should be recognized despite the distortions and limitations of natural law. A second debate regarding natural law concerns whether the Bible or natural law should be the means through which believers communicate with unbelievers. While neo-Calvinists argue that the Bible should be the moral foundation for public communication with unbelievers, VanDrunen argues that natural law, which exists for both believers and unbelievers, should be the medium through which believers communicate. The background to VanDrunen’s emphasis on natural law lies in the fact that the West has moved beyond Christendom and entered an era of pluralism under post-Christianity. Christians have become a minority in society, and the church is losing influence in a multiethnic, multicultural, and multi-religious society. In this context, transformationalism, which emphasized the Bible, is facing its limitations. VanDrunen proposes a path for Christians to establish themselves as responsible members of society through natural law and general revelation. He aims to let go of the excessive desire to make this world a completely Christian world and instead fulfill Christian cultural responsibilities within the limits permitted by God. VanDrunen’s intention is valid and relevant to most non-Christian nations today, where the separation of church and state is enshrined in their constitutions. I hope this paper dispels misunderstandings and prejudices about VanDrunen’s natural law and two-kingdom theory, and serves as an opportunity to understand his thought. VanDrunen’s natural law theory suggests a way for believers, both in church and in the world, to live internally centered on the Bible, while externally communicating with non-believers through natural law and general revelation.
