중독 현상으로서의 신앙 경험에 대해 다룬 논문이다. 본 논문은 종교중독을 하나님께서 부여하신 자유를 심각하게 훼손하는 강박적이고 습관적인 신앙 행위로 규정하며, 신학적으로 우상 숭배의 한 형태라는 점을 부각한다. 논문의 앞부분은 종교중독에 대한 전반적인 이해를 제공하고 있는데, 사례 연구를 통해 종교중독의 개념, 핵심 증상, 원인 등에 대해 다루었다. 특히 종교중독자 내면의 심리에 주목하는데, 종교중독자들은 죄책감, 수치심, 회피의 기제, 자신에 대한 불신과 낮은 자존감 등을 간직한 것으로 보인다. 그리고 종교중독의 진단 가능성에 대해 다루었다. 논문의 뒷부분에는 종교중독에 대한 목회신학적인 성찰을 담았다. 먼저 종교중독은 인간 내면의 깊은 갈망의 왜곡된 표현으로, 하나님을 향한 열망을 자신이 집착하는 대상을 통해 채우려는 시도이다. 그러기에 중독은 영적인 질병이며, 인간에게 주어진 자유에 대한 그릇된 사용이다. 따라서 목회상담자는 내담자가 자신의 영적 갈망을 파악하도록 돕고, 보다 건강한 방법으로 자신의 욕구를 표출할 수 있도록 인도해야 한다는 점을 제안했다. 그리고 중독에서 벗어나기 위해서는 은혜의 경험이 필수적이라는 것과 은혜를 경험하기 위한 영적 수단으로 묵상과 관상의 방법을 제시하였다. 또한 신앙공동체야말로 중독의 권세로부터 벗어날 수 있도록 도울 수 있는 최적의 환경이라는 점을 강조하였다.
Abstract
This article deals with religious experience as an addictive phenomenon. Religious addiction is defined as any compulsive, habitual religious behavior that seriously limits the freedom of human desire generously given by God. Addiction, which includes religious addiction, is a deep-seated form of idolatry, in which the objects of our addictions become our false gods. The first half of the paper examines the reality of religious addiction, its core symptoms, and main causes. We investigate the deep inner dynamics of those who are addicted to religion, such as feelings of guilty, shame, attempts to escape from painful life situations, decreased self-confidence, and low self-esteem. A sample diagnostic tool for religious addiction is also provided. In the second half of the paper, which is its more constructive part, we propose a pastoral theology of religious addiction. First, we argue that religious addiction reveals a person’s deep desire for God in a twisted form. Religious addiction is also a form of idolatry that hinders the proper use of human freedom. Thus, pastoral caregivers must help counselees discern their genuine desire for God and express those desires in more acceptable and healthy ways. Second, we highlight that grace is the key to deal with addiction and vanquish its destructiveness. Third, we stress the importance of the healthy faith communities to treat and prevent religious addiction.
