Abstract

This thesis examines a persistent instability within conservative Christian ethics concerning the prohibition of homosexual intercourse. Across magisterial documents (CCC, CDF), evangelical and Reformed statements (Nashville Statement, SBC resolutions, PCA reports), and major scholarly treatments (Sprinkle, Hill; Loader, DeFranza), there is consensus on four propositions: (T1) if homosexual intercourse is prohibited, it must be avoidable; (T2) the norm remains fully valid even when avoidance appears impossible; (T3) faithful discipleship requires not only behavioral abstinence but also a comprehensive reorientation of identity and relational patterns; and (T4) the prohibition is grounded in God’s sovereign authority as Creator over human embodiment. Yet T1–T3 appear mutually incompatible: How can a norm be absolute (T2) and formation-directed (T3) while seeming to presuppose immediate feasibility (T1)? The thesis argues that this tension does not arise from a defect in doctrine but from a categorical conflation that flattens diverse uses of “ought” into a single plane. Drawing on Graham Cullity’s tripartite framework, it distinguishes decisive ought (OughtD ), rational ought (OughtR ), and evaluative ought (OughtE ), and reassigns the propositions accordingly: T2 ↔ Ought D (an exceptionless prohibition), T1 ↔ Ought R (conditions for blame, sensitive to justified beliefs about impossibility and the relevant capacity-and-opportunity condition, CanCO), and T3 ↔ Ought E (a formative ideal pursued through grace, community, and discipline without implying immediate feasibility or creating exceptions). This differentiation reconciles the propositions: the norm’s permanence is preserved, responsibility is apportioned with epistemic and practical precision, and formation unfolds as a lifelong process.
