Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the characteristics of definitions in the 《Gyeoremal Keunsajeon》. The section ‘General Definitions’ examines the general principles, citation of existing dictionary definitions, and the criteria for selecting basic headwords. The section ‘Definition Format’ categorizes and describes the features under ‘Definition Term, Synonyms, Standard and Variant Forms, Regional Dialects, Colloquial and Derogatory Terms, Pronunciation Notation, Original and Transformed Forms, Slang, Honorific and Humble Terms, Kinship Terms, and Incorrect Usages.’The content-related characteristics of definitions in 《Gyeoremal Keunsajeon》 are as follows. First, considering language usage in both North and South Korea, headwords, terms, or expressions that may not be commonly used in either region were mutually agreed upon to ensure they are acceptable to both. Second, the dictionary respects vocabulary and definitions widely used in everyday life by including terms found exclusively in either the 《Pyo-dae》 (South Korean Standard Dictionary) or 《Jo-dae》 (North Korean Standard Dictionary), thereby recognizing the usage of both. Third, in cases of normative differences between North and South, the definitions follow the norm recognized by either side. Fourth, words that differ or correspond between the two regions are explicitly marked, allowing users to easily recognize them, thereby laying a foundation for a dictionary aimed at North-South language integration. The structural characteristics are as follows. First, conciseness is pursued by providing information that applies to all definitions at the bottom as an [Appendix] note when the same information pertains to multiple entries. Second, entries of the same type are presented in a uniform format, ensuring consistency in the definition structure. Third, regional dialects are presented with related terms and usage examples in the same way as standard language.
