듀이 교육사상에 대한 비판과 변론: 종교교육과 인성교육의 측면에서

학자들을 포함한 많은 보수적인 성향을 가진 사람들에 의해 한 세기가 넘도록 지속적으로 듀이의 교육철학은 학생들의 인성을 망친 주범이라는 비판을 받아왔다. 특히 미국의 보수주의자들 사이에서는 듀이의 철학이 그전까지 미국사회와 학교에서 인성교육을 주로 담당하였던 종교적 가치를 무너뜨림으로 인해 인성교육에 심각한 위기를 가져왔다고 주장하고 있다. 이 연구는 듀이 비판자들이 주장하는 것처럼 과연 듀이가 종교적 가치를 무너뜨려 오늘날 미국 사회와 학교가 경험하는 인성교육의 위기를 가져왔는지를 살펴보고자한 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 연구자는 듀이가 종교에 적대적일 뿐만 아니라 학교교육에서 종교의 역할을 약화시켜 인성교육에 심각한 위기를 가져왔다는 듀이 비판자들의 비판을 살펴보았다. 다음으로 다음의 세 가지 질문 즉 1) 듀이는 과연 종교에 적대적이었는가 2) 듀이는 공교육에서 종교교육을 제거하려 하였는가 3) 듀이의 교육철학은 학생들의 정신을 망쳤는가에 답함으로써 듀이가 종교와 종교적 가치를 무시하지 않았음을 보이고 듀이의 교육이 진정으로 지향한 것이 무엇인지를 밝힘으로써 듀이에 대한 비판이 정당한지를 살펴보았다.
Abstract
For more than a century, Dewey's philosophy of education has been criticized by many conservative people, including scholars, as the main culprit for ruining the moral character of students. In particular, conservatives in the U.S. argue that Dewey's philosophy has brought about a serious crisis in character education because it has destroyed religious values, which were primarily responsible for character education in American society and schools. This study aims to see if Dewey has brought about the crisis of character education experienced by American society and schools today by destroying religious values, as Dewey critics claim. To achieve this goal, the study first looked at criticism from Dewey critics who said that the role of religion in school education has weakened, causing a serious crisis in character education. Next, the study looked at whether criticism of Dewey can be justified or not by attempting to answer the following three questions: 1) Was Dewey hostile to religion? 2) Did Dewey try to remove religious education from public education? 3) Did Dewey's philosophy of education ruin the moral character of students?
