Abstract
This paper examines the critical perspective surrounding the property theory of Toegye and attempts to reinterpret the existing perception of Toegye's wealth management as a simple pursuit of wealth. It has been pointed out that Toegye, despite maintaining the idea of being wary of wealth as a Confucian scholar, owned many slaves and all answers and actively managed the farm. These contents have been reduced to gossip for numerous articles, materials, and lectures due to the Toegye property theory, but there are few specific objections to this. This study suggests that Toegye should understand property not simply as a means of accumulating personal wealth, but as a part of his responsibility to maintain and protect families and local communities. In particular, most of the slaves managed by Toegye were paid slaves and were guaranteed certain autonomy and economic activity, which is distinct from the Western sense of 'slavery system'. In addition, Toegye prioritized rational management and community protection rather than indiscriminate greed in the collection and management of slaves, and maintained a frugal and innocent life throughout his life. Of course, this does not mean that he is trying to defend it from a critical standpoint of the status system of the Joseon Dynasty. However, although the additional management pursued by Toegye has a characteristic as a foundation for supporting community life and is closely related to the establishment of a Neo-Confucian order in Joseon society in the 16th century, it is necessary to be wary of a series of uncritical claims that are regarded as simply hypocritical attitudes of individual property accumulation or wealth pursuit.
