Abstract

This study reinterprets the emerging issue ofemotional ethicsin the age of artificial intelligence (AI) through the lens of Toegye Yi Hwang’s(李滉, 1501–1570) theory of emotions—particularly his doctrines of theFour Beginnings and Seven Emotions(四端七情論) and theUnity of Mind, Nature, and Emotions(心統性情論). By doing so, it examines the moral structure of emotions and the possibility of restoring a richly humanistic ethics. Contemporary discussions in AI ethics tend to emphasize normative principles such as fairness, accountability, and transparency; however, the foundational role of emotion in moral judgment has received insufficient attention. In response, this study foregrounds Toegye’s proposition that “The principle issues and the material forces follow”(理發氣隨) to argue that emotions constitute ethical actions regulated by moral principle(理). Toegye’s theory ofmind–nature–emotionproposes a structural integration of emotion and reason, whereby the mind(心) governs nature(性) and unifies emotions(情). His doctrine of theFour Beginnings and Seven Emotionsfurther clarifies the hierarchy of moral emotions by distinguishing their respective modes of activation, thereby revealing the potential for ethical cultivation and correction of emotional life. Moreover, the virtues ofreverence(敬) andritual propriety(禮) serve as practical disciplines that enable both internal moral reflection and external relational harmony, thus specifying the concrete process through which emotions become ethically regulated. This Toegyean emotional framework can, in turn, be reformulated as a design principle for AI emotional ethics. Building on the structure oflifa qicong, the study proposes an “Ethical Emotion Feedback System”(EEFS), which integrates the stages of emotional arousal(理發氣隨), self-reflection(敬), and relational harmonization(禮) into a single ethical feedback loop. Such a model suggests the possibility of developing AI beyond the mere recognition and simulation of emotions toward functioning as anethical respondentcapable of regulating and evaluating emotional states according to moral principles. Ultimately, this study argues that emotion is not the antithesis of reason but rather an ethical medium through which reason is realized, and that the moral cultivation of emotion is central to reestablishing humanistic ethics in the age of artificial intelligence. Toegye’s emotional theory thus provides enduring anthropological insight within technological civilization and offers a new paradigm for ethical coexistence grounded in the harmony of emotion and reason.
