Abstract

This study examined the effects of sustainable development education using the game “FUTURE WORLDS” on 30 graduate students. A test tool was developed and applied to measure changes in participants’ perceptions of sustainable development. To reflect the close connection between sustainable development and systems thinking, the tool was designed in the form of a concept map, which is useful for measuring systems thinking. The study found that most participants developed simple causal models using the concepts of system components from the game. t-tests and Epistemic Network Analysis (ENA) methods were used to analyze the impact of the game on participants’ perceptions. The participants’ use of concepts to model sustainable development was broader than before the game, and the increase in the number of concepts used was statistically significant. Furthermore, participants’ perceptions of sustainable development at pre-test were limited to environmental aspects. However, after playing the game, their perceptions expanded to consider development that allows humans and systems to coexist. The study results demonstrate the potential of FUTURE WORLDS as an educational tool to promote awareness of balanced and integrated sustainable development.
