This paper attempts to interpret『Prinz Friedrich von Homburg』taking ‘infeudation’ into consideration. As mentioned above, the writing reflects the times and it is hard to appreciate the true value of the work setting aside historical situation. When Heinrich von Kleist was writing, Prussia was in a state of political disorder. Especially after 1806 when the Holy Roman Empire was defeated Napoleon's army in Jena and Auerstedt, it was on the decline and internal reform started to burgeon inside Prussia. Against this backdrop,『Prinz Friedrich von Homburg』describes Prussian resolution for reform in a way as it is regarded as the first and sole drama in which deals with conflicts between individuals and society. Furthermore, the setting of the work was against the backdrop of war and the writer understands it very well as he himself served under the flag. In this sense, 『Prinz Friedrich von Homburg』seeks to show Prussian army’s will to reform or ‘Auftragstaktik’through projecting the process of the prince’s contumacy, punishment, amnesty and self-conquest.
