이 글은 로티의 미국적 애국심의 내용을 분석한다. 애국심에 대한 로티의 생각에 대해 어떤 이는 염려할 것이 없는 것으로, 또 다른 이는 염려스러운 것으로 판단한다. 그 판단 기준은 그의 애국심이 세계시민주의에 대해 개방적인가 하는 것이다. 로티의 세계시민주의는 자문화에서 출발하여 대화와 설득을 통해 타문화를 포용하는 과정을 거쳐 실현된다. 문제는 이 과정에서 변화를 겪는것(으로 상정되는 것)은 자문화가 아니라 타문화라는 점이다. 그런 점에서그의 세계시민주의는 타자에 대한 진정한 존중을 포함한다고 보기 어렵다. 그의 관점에서 보자면, 세계 질서는 부르주아 자유주의의 정신과 제도가 구현되어야 비로소 확립된다. 그가 자유주의 사회의 덕목으로 제시하는 대화와 설득도 ‘자기’, ‘자문화’의 근원적 변화의 가능성을 포함하지 않는다는 점에서 타자의 자기화로 귀착될 가능성이 높다. 애국심이 국가의 개선을 위해 필요하다는 것은 분명해 보인다. 그러나 국가의 경계로 인해, 그리고 국가의 경계를 넘어 존재하는 많은 문제들은세계시민주의를 요청한다. 로티의 미국적 애국심의 부정성을 지양하기위해서는, 로티가 제안하는 것과는 다른 세계시민주의가 필요하다.
Abstract
This paper analyzes Rorty’s american patriotism and examines its implications toward cosmopolitanism. Examining his patriotism, some say it is dangerous, others not. The criterion of that judgement is whether his patriotism can be extended to cosmopolitanism or not. To achieve cosmopolitanism, from the standpoint of Rorty, we cannot but first start at our own ethnic, or cultural group. And then, through conversation or persuasion, other cultures are included. In this process, however, the possibility of change of ‘self’ or ‘western culture’ is not assumed, but ‘other’ or ‘non-western culture’. So, it is hard to say his cosmopolitanism contains the spirit of other-respect. It seems obvious that patriotism is needed to improve a country. But lots of problems due to and beyond the boundary of nation-state require cosmopolitanism. To overcome the negativity of Rorty’s american patriotism, cosmopolitanism, but another cosmopolitanism than Rorty’s is required.
