Abstract

Although 325,000 South Korean army troops fought in the Vietnam War, few studies of South Korean Vietnam War veterans exist. It appears that they are at high risk of PTSD in later life. We used a lifespan developmental model to predict PTSD symptoms in later life among 450 male South Korean Vietnam War veterans (Mage = 66.98, SD = 3.04). They completed mail surveys about pre-war (prior stressors and childhood family environment), warzone (combat exposure, global feelings of personal control, unit support, and appraisals of military service), post-war experiences (social support and life events), and current PTSD symptoms. We found that all variables were related, directly or indirectly, to PTSD symptoms in later life. Path analysis revealed that protective (cumulative advantage model) and vulnerability pathways (cumulative disadvantage model) significantly predicted PTSD but were inversely related to each other. We also compared the characteristics of South Korean Vietnam War veterans with those of US veterans and found that childhood environments had direct effects on PTSD in US veterans, but only indirect effects among the South Korean veterans. The findings highlighted the importance of a lifespan perspective for understanding the long-term impacts of combat exposure.
