Abstract

The success or failure of military education largely depends on instructors, and the competencies of these instructors and their development are crucial. This study aims to systematically analyze the demand for competency development among military instructors and propose measures to build an effective instructor competency support system. To achieve this, a survey was conducted targeting all instructors currently employed at military schools under the Army Training and Doctrine Command, and the responses of 649 participants were analyzed. The main findings of the study are as follows. First, Instructors generally agreed on the necessity of competency training operations. Second, Instructors preferred face-to-face lectures/workshops and the provision of materials. In terms of the themes and content of these programs, there was a high demand for methods related to creating and utilizing teaching materials and communicating with and counseling trainees. Third, To perform the duties of an instructor effectively, the need for institutional support was emphasized, including reducing administrative tasks and expanding autonomy in teaching methods. Forth, The demand for the operation of center for teaching and learning showed a high need for learning support for trainees, and the preferred timing for offering competency enhancement programs was before and during qualification review preparation. Based on these findings, the study suggests policy measures for establishing a competency support system centered around teaching and learning centers, as well as institutional improvements and environmental enhancements in the military.
