Abstract

Illustrations, or the medium of visual images, have long been a part of the book in East Asia, as well as coexisted with written scripts ever since the beginning of literary texts. The nature of the relation between written texts and illustrations, and how they interact to complete “reading” is thus a one of the critical questions to the students of the culture of books and reading. In this context, this article explores the significance of illustrations included in the Samgang haengsil-to [Illustrated Guide to the Three Relations], a Chosŏn-Korean moral primer. The Samgang haengsil-to is a book recorded stories of exemplary loyal subjects, filial sons, and devoted wives with added illustrations that represented the scenes of their moral actions. How did the illustration of the Samgang haengsil-to, which was in fact intended to morally transform the general public often designated as “ignorant men and women” in the Confucian literature, contribute to the reading of the illiterate? Recalling the conceptual and generic difference between to (diagram) and hwa (picture) that persisted traditionally, I propose that the illustrations of the Samgang haengsil-to shifted from hwa, realistic pictures of concrete scenes in life with which to evoke the viewer’s tension and affects, to to, principally abstract delineation of structural construction with which to instruct readers. In this sense, the illustrations of the Samgang haengsil-to became yedo (ritualistic manual) for commoners, formularizing concrete methods for the illiterate to perform moral actions.
