Abstract
This paper aims to adopt the conceptual metaphor theory to analyze how political discourseis conceptualized via JOURNEY metaphor. According to Lakoff & Johnson(1980),metaphor is not only a form of human language but also a matter of human action andthought, which is called the conceptual metaphor theory. In recent years, there have been alot of researches studying political discourse from the perspective of metaphors. In accordancewith the political conceptual metaphors, the material used in this study is the data collectedfrom 10 presidential inaugural addresses of the most recent six presidents of theUnited States. Based on the data, we found that there are several sub-metaphors such as[Nation or people are travellers], [political/social goals are destinations], [Political strategiesare roads, ways, directions or paths], [Political difficulties/problems/challenges are obstacles, barriers and burdens], and [Political changes/actions/reforms are movement forward] inAmerican presidential inaugural addresses. Finally, we found that the important implicationof the journey metaphor in the political discourse as well as the inauguration of the USPresidents was the American dream. When the American dream is combined with the journeymetaphor, the American dream is conceptualized as a living subject. It is concluded thatpresidents usually employ metaphors not only to express their own ideas and politicalthought, but also to persuade their people by means of mapping concrete concepts onto abstractones.
