Abstract
This essay is aimed at introducing briefly the theory, method, and practice of diary studies in Western culture. The diary or journal itself is a unique genre of which form and contents are all free. It seems to have been ‘invented’ for the commercial and administrative needs in the ancient worlds like Chaldea and Egypt. Its more original form might be a kind of m emorandum which was basically succeeded through the ancient Greek ephēmeris and Roman diarium to the Italian libro di famiglia in the Renaissance. By the late seventeenth-century in England, the Puritan journal reflecting on his or her spiritual self appeared, and after late eighteenth-century the European expressed much more interest in the secular self which would be one of the important characteristics of the modern private diary. One of the seminal debates in contemporary diary studies concerns whether the ‘self’ of each author is essentially a single and independent substance, or only a historical and cultural construct as the Post-modernists insist on. By making a distinction between ‘narrating self’ and ‘narrated self’, Paul Ricoeur suggests the concept of the ‘narrative identity’ which seems particularly useful for analyzing the traumatic selves during the Holocaust. The ‘self-fashioning’ by Stephen Greenblatt is of use for explaining the process of formation of the newly awaken and adapted self, and the perspectives and methods of microhistory could be applied to the various cases ofboth exceptional events and repeated daily lives.
