이 연구의 목적은 한국사회의 압축 근대성 분석을 위해 현대일기 자료를 활용하는 방법을 모색하는데 있다. 일기는 구조사 중심의 역사 연구로부터 일상사 중심의 ‘아래로부터의 역사’로의 전환과 함께 주요 역사 연구의 자료로 부각되기 시작하였다. 일상사 연구에서 일상이란 ‘작은 사람들’의 모든 일상이 아니라 구조·체제와 조우하는 개인의 일상을 의미한다. 현대일기는 당대의 구조, 제도, 사건에 대한 개인의 느낌, 해석 그리고 경험을 적은 기록이다. 따라서 일기는 일상사 연구의 중요한 자료이다. 현대일기는 글쓰기의 대중화를 기반으로 등장하였으며 국민교육장치로 권장·보급되었다. 그러나 글쓰기를 통해 형성된 개인의 정체성은 사회적 규율과 억압에 대한 저항의식을 키운다. 즉 현대일기는 구조의 강제와 개인의 주체성이 만나고 부딪치는 현장이다. 따라서 일상사 연구에서 현대일기 읽는다는 것은 개인의 사회구조를 상대로 보이는 인식과 행위를 발견하는 것이다. 순응, 저항, 침묵, 회피 등은 개인이 체제를 대하는 태도와 행위의 양상들이다. 개인의 기록으로부터 주체로서의 행위자성, 구조적 요구에 대한 전복성, 일상의 반복적 재생산, 그리고 역사적 경로의 다양성을 읽어내는 미완료성 등을 확인하는 것이 현대일기 읽기의 방법론일 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to seek methods of utilizing modern diaries for analyzing compressed modernity of Korean society. Diaries began to emerge as important sources for historical research with the shift from structuralist historiography to the study of everyday life, known as "history from below." In everyday life studies, the term "everyday" does not refer to all aspects of the lives of "Kleine Leute" but rather to the experiences and feelings of individuals as they encounter the social structure and system. Modern diaries are records of individuals' feelings, interpretations, and experiences regarding the structures, institutions, and events of their time. Thus, diaries can be used as crucial sources for the study on history of everyday life. Modern diaries emerged based on the popularization of writing and were encouraged and disseminated as sistem of national education. However, the personal identity shaped through writing fosters a sense of resistance to social discipline and oppression. Modern diaries represent a site where structural coercion and individual subjectivity encounter. Therefore, reading modern diaries in the context of history of everyday life is about uncovering individuals' perceptions and actions in response to social structures. Conformity, resistance, silence, and avoidance are various modes of individuals' attitudes and behaviors toward systems. The methodology for reading modern diaries would involve identifying aspects such as agency as subjects, subversion of structural demands, repetitive reproduction of everyday life, and the imperfectivity of diverse historical trajectories from personal documents.
